Journalist Dean Jones believes that Jota is the type of attacker that Tottenham will look to sign in January, suggesting that the club might put off signing a number nine until next summer.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have relayed plenty of reports which have talked up the chances of Jota potentially reuniting with Ange Postecoglou at Spurs.
This includes a report from Football Insider on October 8 which explained that the winger has been frozen out of the first-team picture at Al-Ittihad since his move to the Saudi Arabian club this summer.
The report stated that the Saudi Pro League side have exceeded their limit of foreign players allowed and that Tottenham are monitoring his situation.
It was even suggested by SportMediaSet (via Fichajes.com) last week that the Lilywhites are set to explore a loan move for the winger.
However, TEAMtalk explained a couple of ways ago that Spurs would face competition from Celtic, who are keen on re-signing Jota, with the player himself thought to be open to a return to Parkhead.
Should Tottenham make a move for Jota on loan?
Jones suggested that signing the 24-year-old would make a lot of sense for Spurs, particularly if it is a loan deal, stating that Tottenham could subsequently revamp their forward line again next summer in order to facilitate a title tilt in 2024-25.
When asked about the speculation linking Jota with a move to Spurs, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “If it is possible on a loan deal, I think it’s got more potential for Spurs because it really does feel like a no-brainer for Postecoglou, who has worked with him before and wants more players of that type around his frontline.
“I would put Tottenham more into that bracket of what Arsenal were last season, when they were title pretenders rather than contenders. There’s nothing wrong with that. You can be pretenders at a time when nobody expected you to even be in the conversation, that’s fine. It’s the season after that actually matters.
“I think that Tottenham are about a year behind Arsenal here in terms of their growth. They can stay in that top-four battle without going and splashing on a striker and not being sure that it’s exactly the right player that they need for right now.
“Bringing in Jota on loan and then weighing up the purchases longer-term seems like something which probably makes more sense to me.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Jota’s relationship with Ange might work in Tottenham’s favour, I do wonder if the Portuguese star would prioritise regular game time, which he would likely not get at the North London club.
