Journalist Paul Brown has revealed that several clubs across the Premier League are now eyeing a move for Toni Kroos, who was mooted as a shock target for Tottenham earlier this week.
With Kroos’ current contract at Real Madrid running out next summer (Transfermarkt), his immediate future is now in doubt.
The Sun reported a few days ago that the midfielder’s representatives are waiting to see if Los Blancos offer him a new deal.
If they fail to do so before Christmas, it is explained that the German could move to the Premier League in January, having always fancied a crack at English football
The report claimed that the 33-year-old’s representatives would reach out to Premier League clubs, asserting that Tottenham is a ‘likelier destination’ than Manchester City for the World Cup winner in January even though he has played for Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.
Should Tottenham move for Toni Kroos?
Brown has now confirmed that Kroos does have an eye on a switch to the Premier League but he insisted that no club has made a concrete move for the player so far.
The journalist told Give Me Sport: “Toni Kroos is clearly being offered around to various clubs in Europe. His representatives have let it be known that he quite fancies playing in the Premier League, and that’s attracted a lot of interest.
“Nobody has firmed that up as yet, but he is a player who lots of clubs in the Premier League have coveted and tried to sign before. He is now 33 and not playing the kind of key role that he was for Real Madrid. His contract is coming to an end, so I think this is why there are stories.
“I don’t think he has made his mind up yet about what to do in the future. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he still decided to sign a new deal, if he is offered one, and stay at Real Madrid. He is playing games for them.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Kroos would add a lot to any squad, given his experience and quality, he does not fit the age profile that Tottenham tend to go for.
Postecoglou evidently likes working with younger players over established superstars and it will be interesting to see if the Aussie coach makes an exception if the Real Madrid star becomes available.
