Ange Postecoglou has insisted that he is not a fan of simply stockpiling the squad with as many world-class talents as possible, insisting that the challenge instead is to assemble a squad that is well-balanced.

Tottenham’s opponents on Monday night, Chelsea, are certainly finding out this season that just throwing money at your problems is not necessarily going to fix them.

Despite all the big-money signings that the Blues have made recently, Mauricio Pochettino has struggled to put out a balanced side that is capable of picking up consistent results.

Chelsea come into the London derby on Monday knowing that a loss to Spurs would see their rivals build a whopping 17-point lead over them, just 11 games into the campaign.

In contrast to the West London club, Tottenham’s summer recruits have hit the ground running this season, with the Lilywhites looking an extremely balanced unit.

You can’t build a squad with money alone, says Ange

Postecoglou has said that the main challenge is to ensure that all the members of the squad buy into your methods and are ready to perform the roles that they are required to.

When asked if he would like £1 billion to spend like Chelsea have over the past couple of transfer windows, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “Not necessarily.

“I’ve always said I’ve never felt it is about just spending money. That’s been proved time and time again. Yeah, look if you get it all right then you’ve got a pretty strong case but there’s always a limit to every team.

“You can’t have 24 world-class players. That will never work. It doesn’t work, it’s been proven.

“It’s about having a squad that’s balanced, guys that are committed to a cause, guys that maybe aren’t going to play every game but every time they play they are going to make a huge impact for you because they buy into what you are trying to build.

“Just spending endless money to get the best players has been proven time and time again is not the answer. The answer is to get the right chemistry in your team, in your squad, to have 24 players committed to one cause.

“I don’t think you can do that If you just get the 24 best players in the world. That’s a headache I definitely don’t want.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I fully expected Chelsea to struggle at the start of this season as it was always going to be difficult for the squad to gel when so many new faces arrive through the door.

Having said that, there is some serious talent in their squad and I believe it is only a matter of time before Pochettino settles on a winning combination and things start clicking for them on the pitch.

That is why it is important for Spurs to use the momentum we have to our advantage and build an unassailable lead over the Blues, who are still very much capable of a late assault for a top-four spot.
