Journalist Dean Jones would not put it past Eric Dier to force his way back into Tottenham’s starting eleven over the course of the season.
Dier is seemingly not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans at the moment, with the centre-back not having played a single minute of football so far this season.
While some sources have suggested that the defender would want to leave on a free transfer next summer (Alasdair Gold – Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham), there seems to be no shortage of interest in his services ahead of January.
On October 9, The Times reported that Sporting Lisbon are exploring re-signing the Tottenham man, explaining that the Portuguese club’s president Frederico Varandas has a good relationship with the England international.
It also subsequently emerged that Roma are eyeing a move for Dier with TuttoSport (14/10 via Corriere Giallo Rosso) suggesting that the 29-year-old is Jose Mourinho’s number top centre-back target in January.
Could Eric Dier force his way back in at Spurs?
Jones believes that we might not have seen the last of Dier in a Tottenham shirt but the journalist acknowledged that the defender might be tempted to leave if some interesting opportunities arrive in January.
He told GiveMeSport: “I wouldn’t write Eric Dier off. He has been written off by people before and found a way back into the team. Clearly, he is not first-choice at the moment and isn’t going to get a ton of game time anytime soon, but things can change. It’s going to depend on how patient he is.
“It wouldn’t be a huge shock to see him force his way back in there at some point this season. But I think that the pairing they’ve got at the moment is working so well that he’s going to have to bide his time, so it’s whether he is willing to do that at this stage of his career.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if there are a couple of teams who come in for Eric Dier in January, and then he’ll have a big decision to make.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Dier is the man that Ange will likely turn to if there is an injury to one of Romero and Van de Ven. However, if Tottenham do bring in a new centre-back (or potentially even two) in January, one would expect the 29-year-old to leave rather than wait until his contract runs out next summer.
