Guglielmo Vicario has admitted that he is over the moon with the way things are going at Tottenham Hotspur at the moment but insisted that he and his teammates are determined to keep going.
Vicario was reportedly on the radar of several top Italian sides in the summer, including Juventus and Inter Milan (One Football) but it was Tottenham who were the first to strike a deal with Empoli for the goalkeeper.
The 27-year-old has now reflected on his journey from the Italian lower leagues to the Premier League and has spoken of his Champions League ambitions.
He told Radio Serie A (as relayed by Football Italia): “I felt the need for something more competitive and found a fantastic club in a top league. I will always be grateful to my life for this journey, as I started from the interregional amateur divisions, climbing step by step to reach a dream.
”I bring all those experiences with me and treasure them. The Champions League is another dream, the next objective to achieve. It is an ambitious competition and I would love to experience it as a protagonist.”
Vicario wants to keep the Tottenham train moving
When asked about Tottenham’s impressive start to the season, he said: “We started with big expectations and the important thing is to keep that enthusiasm going.”
Vicario also spoke about how he is settling into life in England, both on and off the pitch since his switch to North London in the summer.
The goalkeeper said: “Udogie is like my little brother, he has characteristics to be at the very top, this explosive physicality and is suited perfectly to the Premier League. We do speak Italian in the locker room.
“Admittedly, I do miss Italian food, but when my mother comes to visit she cooks for me. In football terms, the tempo is faster also because teams are more eager to just get the ball back in play immediately. They don’t like time-wasting.”
Despite being part of several Italy squads, Vicario is yet to win a cap for his country, with Gianluigi Donnarumma currently ahead of him in the pecking order.
The Tottenham man spoke about his dream of representing Italy and admitted that it is a dream come true to interact with the legendary Gianluigi Buffon, who now works as the Azzurri’s Team coordinator.
Vicario added: “Wearing the Azzurri jersey gives me goosebumps and singing the national anthem is a special moment. It would be an immense pleasure to represent my country.
“I have a rapport of mutual respect and friendship with Gigio, we are part of a single squad. Buffon was the first I really followed and having him there is so important, as he always gives us valuable advice.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Vicario is quite unfortunate to be in the same age group as Donnarumma as it means that the Tottenham man is going to struggle to win many caps for his country over the course of his career unless the PSG number one has a dramatic downturn in form.
