Tottenham Hotspur are in desperate need of a new centre-back after the injury to Micky van de Ven, and it appears the club has three familiar names on their shortlist ahead of the January transfer window – Lloyd Kelly, Edmond Tapsoba, and Tosin Adarabioyo.
Signing a new defender over the summer was a key priority for Spurs, who were looking to remedy a backline which had conceded 63 goals in the league last season.
Despite speculation linking the North London side with a whole host of targets, Ange Postecoglou eventually landed on Micky van de Ven. After the first ten games of the season, that decision looked to be a masterstroke, with the Dutchman proving to be a hit.
Van de Ven and Cristian Romero instantly established a formidable partnership at the back as Spurs remained unbeaten at the start of the campaign, but Monday’s game against Chelsea brought all that crashing down.
Romero received a red card and will now miss the next three games, while van de Ven picked up what Postecoglou has described as a ‘significant’ hamstring injury (Football.London).
Who will Spurs sign in January?
Suffice to say, Tottenham will now need to reinforce their defensive options in January, and according to sources at Football Insider, the club will look at three centre-backs they considered signing over the summer.
It is thought Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, and Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo are on Tottenham’s three-man shortlist for January. All three were linked with the Lilywhites previously, and it seems that interest has not gone away.
Spurs Web Opinion
If it were up to me, I’d go for Edmond Tapsoba, but he will definitely be the most expensive option. Lloyd Kelly is the more realistic option, and he is a very good defender who is comfortable on the ball. As for Adarabioyo, I do like him, but his fitness issues are a concern.
