Danny Rose says that people outside Tottenham did not understand how important a player Moussa Sissoko was during his N17 days.

It is fair to say that Sissoko’s arrival at Spurs in the summer of 2016 did not excite Tottenham fans as the winger was signed as an alternative to Wilfried Zaha at the time.

The Frenchman struggled to get regular game time during his first couple of seasons at the North London club and was almost seen as a bit of a joke by sections of the fan base.

However, Sissoko won over the Spurs faithful during the 2018-19 season after being moved to central midfield, with the former Newcastle man’s partnership with Harry Winks helping to take the Lilywhites to the Champions League final.

He continued to be an important player during Jose Mourinho’s time at Tottenham, eventually leaving the club to join Watford in 2021.

Moussa Sissoko was underrated at Tottenham

Rose hailed the impact that the 34-year-old had in the Tottenham dressing room and suggested that the defensive work he did often went unnoticed.

The former Tottenham left-back told the Official Tottenham Hotspur Podcast: “Another one would be Moussa Sissoko. People don’t understand how important he was in the dressing room. He never complained, he was never unhappy.

“So unselfish, he played down the right and Serge or Tripps could get forward. He was available 60/70 games per season. I don’t think he got the recognition he deserved.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sissoko was an extremely unpopular figure during his first couple of years at Tottenham and he showed tremendous mental strength to win the fans over.

Most players in a similar situation would have opted to exit the club and try their luck elsewhere but the Frenchman showed that he is a fighter and as a result, become a cult figure at the club.
