Gareth Southgate has called James Maddison up to his latest England squad, issuing a positive sign that the Tottenham man’s injury may not be serious.

According to Charlie Eccleshare, James Maddison has been playing through injury and might benefit from a rest over the coming weeks, whether he is passed fit or not.

Maddison has been a revelation since joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer from Leicester City. The £40m signing already has three goals and five assists for the Lilywhites this season in 12 appearances (Transfermarkt).

The 26-year-old is the one who has been pulling all the strings for Ange Postecoglou‘s side as they made an impressive start to the campaign. Maddison’s connection with skipper Heung-min Son, in particular, has been a highlight.

Sadly, everything came crashing down on Monday night when Spurs fell to a 4-1 defeat to rivals Chelsea. The ten-game unbeaten run came to an end, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are now suspended, and Maddison appeared to have suffered an injury.

James Maddison needs a rest amid England call-up

It is not yet known whether Maddison will return to action this weekend for the game against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Charlie Eccleshare thinks the player should be left out of the squad and allowed to rest until after the international break. Unfortunately, it appears the Spurs midfielder may be asked to attend England duty either way.

He told The View from the Lane podcast: “I was thinking of James Maddison and as desperate as Spurs will be to have him back for the Wolves game, at least if he doesn’t play he might then get two weeks off from the internationals.

“And the sense I get on Maddison is that he’s been carrying things basically all season as well and has been making himself available for the games and getting through them but not a lot more.”

It’s sad but it’s true. Obviously, we would all love to see Maddison take to the field on Saturday, but the long-term ramifications of that could be far worse for Spurs. Let’s give him a rest, allow Lo Celso to step in and show what he can do, and hopefully get Maddison back to his best further down the line.
