The fractious affair between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea on Monday night may have further reaching implications for Raheem Sterling, as footage has emerged of him throwing an object at the Spurs crowd.
One of the most eventful games of the year, if not of all time, played out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this week as Spurs and Chelsea went head to head in a fiery London derby.
Chelsea ultimately took all three points in a 4-1 win, but that scoreline doesn’t even tell half the story. Red cards for Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, five the disallowed goals, and multiple VAR decisions left us plenty to talk about after the game.
Injuries to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have left Tottenham with longer-term issues to deal with, too, but now Chelsea may be worried about one of their own players.
Raheem Sterling could be in trouble
In a report from the Daily Mail, it is said Sterling “could face a ban” from the FA after he seemingly threw a “missile back into the crowd” during the game against Spurs.
In the aftermath of Cole Palmer’s penalty kick to level the scores, the Chelsea players celebrated in front of the home supporters and shushed the Spurs fans.
Further inspection of the situation, thanks to a video on Chelsea’s TikTok account, shows an object coming from the Spurs fans and hitting Palmer on the leg.
As the Blues’ players head back for the restart, Sterling appears to reach for something on the floor and “throw the item back into the crowd.”
It is said the “incident was not spotted by the officials” on the night, but a source at the FA has said it is now “being reviewed” to decide if “any action” should be taken against Sterling.
In the past, we’ve seen Jamie Carragher and Didier Drogba receive three-match bans for throwing objects into the stands, while our own Richarlison was handed a one-match suspension for throwing a lit flare into the crowd prior to his move to Spurs.
Spurs Web Opinion
Sterling should get at least a one-match ban for this incident. It’s incredibly dangerous to throw anything into the crowd like that, but at the same time, the object should not have been thrown at the Chelsea players either. I assume the club will try to identify the person who threw the missile in the first place.
