Various journalists have provided positive updates on Tottenham Hotspur’s reported pursuit of Uruguay defender Sebastian Caceres, with a January move getting the green light from the player and his agent. The best part is, it might only cost Spurs £6.5m too.

Tottenham ideally needed to sign two first-team centre-halves in the summer transfer window. A dismal campaign last year was confounded by the fact the club conceded 63 goals in the league, putting them in the bottom five for the division for that particular area.

The signing of Micky van de Ven has been a huge boost, and his partnership with Cristian Romero at the back had been one of the highlights of an impressive start to the season for Ange Postecoglou.

After the chaotic defeat to Chelsea on Monday, Spurs are now facing three games without Romero due to his red card. Worse still, is the fact that van de Ven pulled up with a severe hamstring injury during the game – it is still unknown how long he will be out of action.

Are Spurs signing Sebastian Caceres?

Those absences will leave Spurs highly exposed in defence, so it’s no surprise that the club is being linked with a number of centre-backs in the upcoming transfer window. Now, it seems Sebastian Caceres could be the solution to the Lilywhites’ issues.

According to reporter Fernando Esquivel, “Tottenham have sent a formal offer to Club America. There is a ‘green light’ from the agent and the player.” The journalist adds that Spurs hope to make the acquisition in January, and that Club America are likely to respond to the offer very soon.

Meanwhile, Jonatan Pena has claimed the deal could be done for as little as £6.5m. He said: “Sebastian Caceres wants to go to Europe as soon as possible. We reiterate; Club America is not going to give him away. Now, they want a minimum of $8m.”

The Uruguayan’s contract expires in just over a year’s time, and it is thought his club may be looking to cash in while they can.

To sign an international defender of this calibre, for that price, would be a fantastic deal for Tottenham. Let’s hope we can get this deal wrapped up as soon as possible, to put our minds at ease a little for the second half of the season.
