Journalist Paul Brown thinks a move to Tottenham would be the wrong option for Kalvin Phillips as Ange Postecoglou already has great options in the middle of the park.
Over recent weeks, there has been plenty of speculation linking Phillips with a move to Spurs, with several outlets suggesting since the start of October that the Lilywhites are ‘really keen’ on winning the race for the midfielder (Football Transfers).
The 27-year-old’s entourage are thought to be fielding enquiries from clubs ahead of January, with Man City even alleged to be open to loaning the player out (The Mirror).
However, Tottenham are expected to face plenty of competition for the England international’s services with reports indicating that Bayern Munich (90 min), Newcastle United (TEAMtalk) and Juventus (Gazzetta via Sport Witness) are all keen on signing the City star.
Should Spurs make a move for Kalvin Phillips?
Brown believes that Phillips is wasted at the Etihad Stadium but admitted that he would be surprised if Spurs make a serious attempt for the midfielder.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I think Phillips could easily play for any of the top clubs in the Premier League. He’s wasted not getting a game at Man City. I think he’s one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, and he showed that at Leeds.
“The Spurs midfield doesn’t appear to need much of an upgrade. It’s functioning pretty well. It has a nice balance, and Postecoglou is getting a tune out of the players in there. So, it might be a surprise if they go for Phillips.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Phillips would be a good like-for-like replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg if the Dane leaves in January.
However, after his experience at Man City, the 27-year-old’s number one priority would be getting regular game time. The former Leeds man is not assured of starting every game at Spurs, which is why he might have doubts over the move.
