Tottenham Hotspur’s proposed lease of the land at Whitewebbs Park faces opposition, and will now be challenged in court.
The club was looking to lease land at the former golf course to build a women’s football academy. The proposal would have seen Tottenham Hotspur take control of the area for 25 years.
Planning permission had been granted in October 2021, with Enfield Council deeming there to be “significant benefits” to the community and the environment based on Tottenham‘s plans to invest in a new cafe and to protect the wildlife in the area.
The plans faced a backlash from local residents and the Enfield RoadWatch and the London branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, however. This is largely due to the supposed restrictions the development will put on the public land.
18% of the park would be occupied by the academy, but a further 36% included in the lease would be made available to the public.
Whitewebbs plans to be discussed in court
Now, the BBC has an update on the situation, and it’s not good news for Tottenham Hotspur.
After staunch opposition, a judge has now “granted permission for a judicial review” on the proposal. A hearing is likely to take place in 2024 before a decision is made.
Friends of Whitewebbs Park chair Sean Wilkinson said the move was a “major advance” for the campaign. He added: “I am delighted, and the supporters of the campaign are absolutely delighted.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’m not entirely clued up on the legal and environmental implications of this whole situation, but to me, it sounds like the club would be making positive change to an area that needs attention. But, if people feel so strongly against the idea, then they deserve to be heard in court, too. I’m sure the right decision will be reached.
