Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves will make history on Saturday afternoon when they square up for the first Premier League game or the weekend, as a player from each side will wear a bodycam for the warm-up.

The two sides go into the game at Molineux hoping to bounce back from disappointing defeats last weekend.

Spurs saw their unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of rivals Chelsea on Monday night in a fiery battle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The game ended 4-1 to the Blues, but that result was overshadowed by the sending off of both Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, as well as five disallowed goals, various other VAR decisions, and injuries to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Spurs part of new Premier League trial

If ever there was a game you’d want to be right there on the pitch with the players, getting into the thick of the action, it was the clash between Spurs and Chelsea. But that may be a possibility in the future, as Tottenham will be part of a trial this weekend which will see a player from each side wearing a bodycam for the pre-match warm-up.

As per the Daily Mail, the trial is part of an “historic partnership” between TNT Sports and the Premier League which will offer fans a “unique perspective” before the match.

The technology was used in pre-season during a game between Aston Villa and Newcastle United, but IFAB laws currently do not permit the use of the devices during a competitive game. It is hoped this trial will change that in the future.

On the idea, Premier League Head of Media Operations and Innovation, Rachael Nightingale, said: “Finding new ways to bring our fans closer to the action on the pitch is a key focus for us. After the success of the bodycam trials at the Premier League Summer Series, we are looking forward to seeing what results this test will deliver for TNT and our audiences around the world.”

This is very exciting. I watched Youri Tielemans’ bodycam footage from that pre-season game and it was fascinating to see how fast-paced and intense the games actually are when you’re right down there on the pitch. I’m not sure the warm-up will be quite as enthralling, but it’s a start.
