Stephen Warnock has suggested that Tottenham lacked the leadership required to slow the game down against Wolves, stating that Son Heung-min is not the sort of person to shout at his teammates.
Spurs held the lead for almost the entirety of the clash at Molineux after Brennan Johnson gave them the lead on three minutes.
However, Gary O’Neil’s men did to Tottenham what the Lilywhites did to Sheffield United back in September, with two stoppage-time strikes from the home side consigning the North Londoners to back-to-back defeats.
There has been plenty of criticism levelled at Spurs for the way they defended Marino Lemina’s winner, with Garth Crooks questioning why Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg did not follow the Wolves star’s run into the box and why Tottenham’s centre-backs were not alive to the danger (BBC Sport).
Does Son need to add more to his captain skills?
Warnock has now pointed the finger at the lack of leaders in the Spurs side, insisting that they needed to slow the game down during stoppage time.
The former Aston Villa man said on The 2 Robbies Podcast on NBC Sport: “Is there enough leadership on the pitch for someone to do that [slow the game down]? Son is not that type, Son is a leader in showing what he can do on the pitch, he’s not a shouter and an organiser.
“And do they need that figure in midfield? To be able to do that, because I think when you go back to Newcastle there and you make a great example of it. Kieran Trippier is the one straight away you’d be thinking, he’s played for [Diego] Simeone.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We certainly did not lack leadership or experience, with Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur being on the pitch when Wolves scored their goals.
One could argue that we should have shut shop defensively once the game was into injury time but we know that this is not what Ange Postecoglou expects from his side.
