The Daily Mirror have claimed that Liverpool are not expected to make a move for rumoured Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips in January despite showing an interest in the Manchester City star last summer.
Over the last few weeks, there has been plenty of speculation linking Phillips with a move to Spurs, with the midfielder thought to be keen to leave Man City in search of regular game time.
This includes an update from Football Transfers last month, which suggested the Lilywhites are ‘really keen’ on winning the race for the 27-year-old.
It has been subsequently suggested that Tottenham could face competition from the likes of Bayern Munich (90 min), Newcastle (TEAMtalk) and Juventus (Gazzetta via Sport Witness) for the England international, with The Sun even stating a few days ago that the Bianconeri are confident of winning the race for the player.
Anfield had also been mooted as a potential destination for Phillips, and Pep Guardiola insisted over the weekend that he would not stop any of his players from joining their title rivals, seemingly giving the green light for the Reds to make an approach for the midfielder (talkSPORT).
Liverpool are not in the race with Spurs for Phillips
The Mirror have now stated that Liverpool did show a keen interest in the former Leeds United star during the summer transfer window before turning their attention to other targets.
However, the outlet alleges that Jurgen Klopp’s men are not expected to reignite their interest in Phillips in January. This is because Liverpool are not thought to be prioritising additions in the middle of the park during the upcoming transfer window.
Spurs Web Opinion
If Phillips’ priority is to get game time ahead of next summer’s European championship, I doubt if he would be keen on a move to Spurs as he would not be guaranteed regular starts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I suspect the 27-year-old might be leaning towards a switch to Newcastle.
