Alan Pardew believes that rumoured Tottenham target Ivan Toney will end up at Arsenal in January.
Toney was one of the most prolific marksmen in the Premier League in his first two seasons in the top flight following Brentford’s promotion.
It seemed only a matter of time before the centre-forward made the step up to a bigger club but he was hit with a lengthy ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules towards the end of last season, which ended any chance of a summer move.
It has been widely reported over the past couple of months that Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to battle it out for the 27-year-old’s signature when his ban lapses in January (Daily Express).
However, this was contradicted by CaughtOffside, who claimed on Monday that Chelsea and Arsenal are battling it out for Toney while Spurs are prioritising a move for Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez in January.
Will Ivan Toney end up at Arsenal over Spurs?
Pardew has now said that he expects the Bees star to end up at the Emirates Stadium.
The former Newcastle manager told talkSPORT (12/11, 6 pm): “Toney is for me the signing (the big clubs should try to make) in January. He is the one. Whoever gets him, I think, will be really fortunate. I think he will end up at Arsenal, actually.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Not only do I not expect Tottenham to pay the kind of fee it would take to prise Toney away from Brentford but I also believe that the 27-year-old would not be Ange’s top choice. Postecoglou would likely prefer a more mobile centre-forward, which is why the Gimenez rumours make more sense.
