Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham Hotspur will not spend ‘crazy money’ in January and are not desperate to make signings unless the right options are available.
There has been a lot said and written about Tottenham’s January plans over the last couple of weeks, with various reports indicating that signing a centre-back and a defensive midfielder is at the top of the club’s agenda (Football Insider).
There has particularly been a lot of speculation about Spurs’ pursuit of a centre-half, with the likes of Lloyd Kelly, Trevor Chalobah and Marc Guehi thought to be among the names on the North London club’s wishlist (GiveMeSport).
More recently, there have also been suggestions that Ange Postecoglou’s men will look to strengthen their wide areas after the injuries to Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic (Tribal Football).
However, David Ornstein remarked in a Q&A on The Athletic last week that Tottenham do not have much money to spend in January, having spent the bulk of the Harry Kane fee in the summer prior to the striker’s move to Bayern Munich.
Tottenham will not push the boat out in January
Romano has now suggested something similar, stating that the Lilywhites will look for opportunities in the final few days of the window.
He told Caughtoffside: “On Spurs, we know they have some injuries in defence at the moment, but they are not desperate to sign cover. It will depend on opportunities.
“They’ve been unlucky because they’ve had a lot of injuries at the same time, but I’m told they won’t panic because they know most of these players will be back at the end of December, so they’ll assess the situation then.”
“Overall, I don’t see Tottenham spending crazy money in January, that’s not the plan at the moment. They’re happy with the balance in the squad right now, but of course, the recovery process of some key players will be important, so perhaps they could look for opportunities towards the end of the January window.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The likes of Romano and Ornstein are likely basing these claims on what they have heard from various agents operating in the game.
While Tottenham do not historically tend to make big-money signings in January, I have a feeling that the club will surprise people with how active they are in the window this time around.
