The agent of the rumoured Tottenham target, Marcos Leonardo, has confirmed that his client will leave Santos to move to Europe in January.
Leonardo is seen by many as the next potential superstar to emerge out of Brazil, with the forward taking the Brasileiro Serie A by storm since breaking into Santos’ first team.
The centre-forward has found the back of the net 21 times in 45 games across all competitions this season (Transfermarkt) and it appears like a call-up to the senior Selecao squad might just be around the corner for the youngster.
Tottenham’s interest in the 20-year-old first came to light in the summer when 90 min reported that the Lilywhites have their eye on the striker.
It was subsequently reported by Fichajes last month that Ange Postecoglou’s side were one of several clubs plotting a January move for the player.
It was alleged that Santos are aware of the interest in Leonardo’s services and would be willing to cash in on him for a fee of around €17m (£14.7m).
Leonardo is ready for the step up amid Spurs links
The striker’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has now said the time has come for the Brazil Under-20 international to make a step up to a bigger club.
He told Relevo: “Already in the previous transfer window, he (Leanardo) had the possibility of being sold.
“But Santos’ sporting situation was very particular. He accepted to stay because he wanted to help out until the end of the season. He didn’t want to leave because it wasn’t the right thing to do.
“But the time has come for the transfer. He wants to have a European experience, and his time will come this winter.”
Spurs Web Opinion
With Tottenham having some top young strikers coming through the system at present, including Alejo Veliz, Jamie Donley, Dane Scarlett, and Will Lankshear, I do not think the Lilywhites would want to block some of their paths by bringing in another talented young number nine.
