Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that despite Manchester City announcing record profits last year, Tottenham remain the best-run club in the Premier League.
While Daniel Levy and the Spurs ownership have understandably been criticised for many of the footballing decisions they have made over the past few years, even their biggest critics would acknowledge that they continue to do an excellent job off the pitch.
One only has to look at the gap that existed between the old ‘big four’ and Spurs when ENIC first took over the club – a gap that now has been entirely erased – to appreciate how well the North London club have been run as a business.
Man City released their annual report for the 2022/23 season last week, revealing profits of £80.4million and overall revenue of £712.8million – the highest ever recorded by a Premier League side.
Are Spurs the best-run club in the Premier League?
While Tottenham are yet to publish their figures for the 2022-23 season, the Lilywhites generated revenue of £444million the previous term. Despite this gulf, Maguire believes that financially, Spurs are a step ahead of the rest, including Man City.
When asked if the Manchester club’s recent figures show they are the best-run club in the division, he told Football Insider: “No, I wouldn’t say that Manchester City are the best-run club in the Premier League. Financially, I still think that Spurs are ahead.
“I think this shows that the Manchester City brand has grown and they have many critics when it comes to that. They now have their own galacticos in the likes of Haaland and Grealish, who are very attractive to sponsors and commercial partners.
“Everybody wants to be partnered and have their product next to the Champions League. They can offer that to sponsors, so they would have picked up a lot in bonuses from their amazing achievements on the pitch last season.
“So that all brings money. You get extra money from Uefa, you get extra money from the Premier League, you get extra money from sponsors and you have got more home matches because of their progress in all competitions.”
Spurs Web Opinion
A club’s sponsorship earning is always going to increase when they enjoy a lot of success, which is why City’s figures are not too surprising.
What is commendable about Tottenham is the fact that they continue to comfortably rank in the top ten in Europe in terms of revenue generation (and higher in terms of profit) despite not enjoying as much success as some of the other big sides.
