Paul Merson believes that a win for either Tottenham or Aston Villa on Sunday would be a huge boost for either side’s European ambitions, but he remarked that he expects the two sides to play out a score draw.
Spurs’ home form has been outstanding so far this season, with the Lilywhites having a perfect record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium barring the London derby against Chelsea, where they were reduced to nine men.
So, Ange Posteocglou’s men will be hoping to get back to winning ways in front of their home support following two disappointing results.
Tottenham are without several of their key players, with their injury list being extremely bloated at the minute, but Postecoglou has insisted that his side will not change the way they play (Daily Mail).
Due to Spurs’ injuries, the likes of Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Roy Keane have all predicted that Unai Emery’s men will emerge with all three points from North London (The Overlap).
Who will win out of Tottenham and Aston Villa?
However, Merson cited Villa’s poor away form as a reason why he expects the spoils to be shared on Sunday.
The former Arsenal midfielder told Sportskeeda: “There are about five Premier League teams that are fighting for a spot in Europe this season and Spurs are one of them. Tottenham are still a very good team even with their injuries.
“Save for that mad few minutes at the end of the game against Wolves, Spurs did well in that game. As for Aston Villa, it’s hard to finish in the top four with an away record like theirs. They have to go to Tottenham and ensure they don’t get beaten there.
“As things stand, they are putting themselves under too much pressure to do it all at Villa Park. But that bubble will burst soon when the big teams come around to visit.
“It’ll be a massive result for whoever wins this game. The international break could be a bit of an equalizer and I think the points will be shared here.”
Prediction: 1-1.
Spurs Web Opinion
There is a lot riding on this game, particularly given that we travel to the Etihad next to take on Manchester City. If we lose on Sunday, we will potentially be staring at the possibility of four straight defeats, which will be a major blow to the squad’s confidence.
