Ange Postecoglou has insisted that Tottenham will not change the way they approach matches just because they are without some key players.
Tottenham need a result against Aston Villa on Sunday to steer the ship in the right direction after two consecutive losses but given the key players that the home side will be without for the game, many pundits have backed Unai Emery’s men to emerge with all three points (The Overlap).
Things do not get any easier for Spurs after this weekend’s clash as they travel to the Etihad Stadium next to take on the reigning Premier League champions.
So, Tottenham’s season risks being significantly derailed after an impressive start, but Postecoglou insisted that his side will continue taking the game to the opposition, no matter who they come up against.
Postecoglou will stick to his Tottenham philosophy
He told Mail Sport on It’s All Kicking Off: “The scrutiny will come but internally, the players and the staff will see I’m not changing. This is who we are going to be.
“Yes we’re under demand, yes we are going to have some key players missing but we are going to go out there, whether it’s Aston Villa, Manchester City or whoever and we’re going to play our football.”
Postecoglou demonstrated in the London derby earlier this month that he will not change his approach no matter the circumstances, with the Lilywhites defending with a high line and pressing Chelsea high up the pitch even when they were down to nine men.
The Tottenham head coach said about that game: “I’ve got nine men out there who totally believe in something and for me that’s gold because that’s the biggest part of the battle. Being ourselves, playing our football, we can still get to where we want to.”
When asked what would have happened if his side had lost another player to a red card that evening, Postecoglou said: “I think I said after the game, ‘if we were down to five we’d still have a go’ – well there’s no point defending with five is there you’ve got no chance.
“I don’t know any other way. I’ve tried to explain this to people that in terms of football philosophy, I’ve stayed really strict to one religion. I’ve went into a library of football books and I got stuck to one section which was about attacking football.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This makes for a refreshing change after years of Mourinho and Conte, who decided to go more and more defensive when there was a downturn in results. That evidently led to doubts creeping into the players’ minds about the system.
