Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he does not get too close to any of his players since he does not want his personal relationships to affect his decision-making when it comes to his role as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur.

Among the many articles over recent months delving into the work Postecoglou has done behind the scenes to transform Tottenham, almost all of them have discussed the Australian’s unique management style.

It has been explained that the Spurs head coach likes to keep some distance from his players, thus allowing his assistant coaches such as Chris Davis, Mile Jedinak and Ryan Mason to do most of the interaction with the squad on a day-to-day basis on the training ground after briefing them on what is expected of them in each session (The Athletic).

However, Postecolgou has now said that he is always open to chatting with any of his players and stressed the importance of establishing a connection with the squad as they look to secure a top four finish in the Premier League table.

Ange Postecoglou explains his managerial style

The 58-year-old told The Daily Mail: “With the players and staff, I don’t spend a lot of one-on-one time with them but that doesn’t mean there is not a connection there. It wouldn’t work if they didn’t feel connected to me but how I show that is probably different to many.

“We have so many people here. My goal is to make every single one of them feel valued so I try and get across as many as possible. But if I had coffee with every single one of them I would do nothing else but have coffee.

“Most of the chats I have with the players are as a group. Of course, players can come to me with issues. It’s just that I won’t be sitting down with them and asking how their day was.”

The former Celtic boss explained that maintaining some distance from the players ensures that there is no bias in his decision-making.

He continued: “I have to make decisions and some of them are hard. It’s human nature that if I like one person more than someone else then I ask: ‘Why am I making this decision?’

“But because I have the same relationship with everyone, I make these decisions on the basis of what’s best. I don’t have anything nagging on my conscience. The key is that the players know this is who I am as a person. I am not putting this on. So they can live with that.”

Different leaders, based on their personalities, have different approaches to building relationships with their subordinates.

Ange Postecoglou does not seem like he is generally one for small talk and he is perhaps being authentic to his true self by not chatting for the sake of doing so with his players.

The one added advantage to the 58-year-old’s method is the fact that when he does speak in team meetings, his messages have a bigger impact.
