Son Heung-min has admitted that he was quite nervous after Ange Postecoglou announced out of the blue that he would be the club captain and asked him to make a speech in front of the whole squad.

With Hugo Lloris no longer having a prominent role at Tottenham with Harry Kane departing the club in the summer, Son was the obvious choice for the captaincy.

Not only is the South Korean now the face of the club, having been at Spurs for nearly nine years and one of the team’s best players, but he is also a very popular member of the changing room.

The early signs are that Son has adapted very well to the leadership role, with the 31-year-old often seen motivating the youngsters on the pitch and leading by example with the work that he puts in on and off the ball.

In fact, it was reported by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold back in August that some at Tottenham did not really see the forward as leadership material and have been taken aback by how he has stepped up to the plate since being handed the armband.

Postecoglou didn’t let Son know about captain choice

However, Son admitted that the task of giving an impromptu speech in front of all of his teammates was not something he particularly enjoyed.

The Tottenham man told Men In Blazers: “To be honest, he (Postecoglou) never told me before (about the captaincy decision). We had a meeting in the morning that day. And all the social media team were there in the meeting room. So I was like why are they here?

“And then suddenly he just announced the new captain is Sonny. I just had to give a speech. This was the most nervous time I ever had. And it was all the players. I always face them. Normally it should be easy, but in front of everybody, the speech was the hardest part for me.”

It was a nice touch by Ange to announce his decision in front of the whole squad so that Son could enjoy the moment with his teammates.

The 31-year-old is probably the kind of empathetic leader that modern-day players prefer rather than the stereotypical hard-nosed and disagreeable captain which has been the norm in football for many decades.
