According to Friday’s print edition of AS (as relayed by Sport Witness), Barcelona view Giovani Lo Celso as a ‘risky bet’ due to the midfielder’s injury history.
It was Mundo Deportivo who first reported last week that Barcelona have identified Lo Celso as a ‘perfect’ replacement for Gavi, after the midfielder was forced off with an ACL injury in Spain’s 3-1 victory over Georgia that is expected to rule him out for the rest of the season and the European Championships
The publication claimed that the Catalan giants would ideally prefer to sign the 27-year-old on loan, given their issues in meeting the FFP requirements.
It was subsequently reported by Sport that the Argentine international is open to the idea of moving to Camp Nou on loan in the January transfer window.
Should Spurs sell Giovani Lo Celso?
AS have now backed up Barca’s interest in Lo Celso, with the outlet stating that manager Xavi Hernandez ‘values’ the player’s profile.
However, it is explained that the club considers the midfielder as a ‘risky bet’, given the amount of football he has missed due to injuries over the last few years.
The report points out that Lo Celso has been sidelined for much of this season due to a hamstring problem he picked up in September.
Finally, the publication adds that Barcelona would need to offload some players to raise money to move for a potential Gavi replacement in January.
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Tottenham are willing to offload Lo Celso in January (which I doubt), there would be no reason for the club to consider loaning the midfielder without an obligation to buy. So, the door to Barca appears to be closed for the 27-year-old, especially considering James Maddison‘s recent injury.
