In his latest press conference, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has refused to rule out the possibility of his side signing a new central midfielder in January to deal with the injury crisis the club is experiencing right now.

There had been rumours that Tottenham would sign a new midfielder back in the summer, but other positions were, rather correctly, prioritised. However, given the current plight of the Spurs squad, Ange Postecoglou may be regretting that decision.

The Lilywhites squad has been depleted by injuries and suspensions, which has played no small part in the team’s current run of three straight defeats.

Naturally, losing players like Micky van de Ven and James Maddison to injury, as well as Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero to suspension, is going to weaken the side.

Now, there are also injuries to Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr to deal with. While the latter may be back in action soon, the former has been cruelly ruled out until February with an ankle issue, just a month after returning from his long-term ACL injury.

Will Spurs sign a central midfielder in January?

So, will Postecoglou look to recruit in central midfield when the January transfer window opens? Judging by his latest comments to the press (via Football.London), there’s a good chance of that happening.

When asked if he will sign a new player to cover for the loss of the aforementioned players, Postecoglou said: “We’re not ruling anything out because what you’ve outlined is best case scenario that everyone stays fit.”

This injury crisis is getting a bit ridiculous now, and then we have Bissouma and Sarr off to the African Cup of Nations in January, too. I think we will have to at least look at signing a centre midfielder on loan to cover for this.
