Dimitar Berbatov has admitted that he sympathises with Richarlison, remarking that the forward has been caught in a negative spiral since his switch to Tottenham in the summer of 2022.

While Richarlison struggled to have the expected impact at Tottenham last season, there were hopes among Spurs fans that he would step up to the plate following Harry Kane’s departure, particularly as the Brazilian had excelled as the number nine in pre-season.

However, the 26-year-old was not able to find his goalscoring boots in the first few matches of the campaign, prompting Ange Postecoglou to move Son Heung-min to the number nine role.

Richarlison did deliver a couple of tidy performances on the left flank before he was sidelined due to a pelvis injury at the start of November.

Various outlets have reported over recent weeks that despite attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, the former Everton man is desperate to stay at Spurs and turn around his career at the North London club (Football Insider).

Berbatov has sympathy for Richarlison at Spurs

Berbatov suggested that the forward’s confidence has been dented due to a lack of continuity at Spurs and hoped that he would be able to give a better account of himself when he returns from injury.

The Bulgarian told Betfair about Richarlison (as relayed by Football.London): “He’s currently sidelined with injury, but his recent comments show that he’s frustrated and his time at Spurs is not what everyone expected it to be. Everyone knows this.

“When you know it’s not going your way, then you get frustrated and angry. Then you try to get out of this hole, but if you don’t know how and you’re still stuck then the manager comes into play.

“If the manager doesn’t give you more time to prove yourself, then you’re going to find it even more difficult to have continual good games.

“You’re going to have one game where you score, but then the moment you feel your confidence is back, the manager decides to put you on the bench for tactical reasons. Now your flow is stopped.

“Then the next game the manager gives you time to play but your flow is gone and then the next game you’re back on the bench. You see? So it comes down to whether the manager likes you as a player or a human being and gives you time to prove yourself.

“It’s not been a great time for him at Spurs so far, but when he’s back he should step up and take his chance and show the manager why he should be playing more regularly.”

This injury lay-off could be a blessing in disguise for Richarlison, who was clearly going through a very hard time. The couple of months on the sidelines would perhaps help him gain some perspective and he will hopefully come back ready and motivated to show everyone what he can do.
