Dimitar Berbatov has said that he expected a response from Tottenham following their defeat to Chelsea but admitted that they have shown shades of the ‘old Spurs’ over the last few weeks.

Ange Postecoglou’s men have fallen to three straight losses in the Premier League, thus going from being league leaders to dropping out of the top four in a short space of time.

The Australian will perhaps point to the club’s bloated injury and suspensions list as a mitigating factor and perhaps argue that his side deserved more from the clashes against Chelsea and Villa.

Berbatov wants to see Spurs bounce back better

However, Berbatov insisted that injuries are part of the game and that Tottenham’s soft underbelly seems to have once again been exposed. 

The Bulgarian told Betfair (as relayed by Football.London): “We wanted to see their reaction to how they lost against Chelsea, it’s been terrible based on the results. Yes, injuries are there, but this is the moment where you put your war boots on and try to get results no matter what.

“Every other team has injuries as well – some more, some less. But to have three successive defeats, it shows you didn’t know how to react after your first loss. Not only that, but you took the lead in each of those games. So to give the lead away, it rings bells of the old Spurs.

“They need to correct that as soon as possible because they’re still near the top four. Don’t let the losing streak continue. You need the points to stay close to the top four and to chase trophies. Now, it’s about the reaction and how to stop the losing streak.”

Things do not get any easier for the Lilywhites, who travel to the Etihad Stadium next and Berbatov suggested that Postecoglou will drill home the message to his players that it is the ideal stage for them to prove their critics wrong.

The former Spurs star added: “Now they have to go and play at Man City. It can’t get worse than that! It’s a bad moment for everyone. Yes, you can try to motivate your players, Ange will try to do that. It’s a tough situation.

“As long as Tottenham avoid defeat then that would be a success. This is the moment as a manager where you tell your players, ‘these are the games where we need to show what we’re made of’. You’d hope the players will react on the pitch.”

During Conte’s first season in charge, we similarly went into the clash against City on the back of successive losses and delivered a statement performance at the Etihad to emerge 3-2 winners. Postecoglou would be hoping history repeats itself on Sunday.
