The Daily Mail have revealed that West Ham United are drafting plans to make the London Stadium the second biggest in the Premier League by overtaking the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in terms of capacity.
Spurs’ state-of-the-art home ground is currently the second biggest across the Premier League behind Old Trafford, with the stadium able to hold 62,850 spectators for matches.
The venue can hold a lot more for concerts and other events and is one of the few modern stadiums that is able to generate a great atmosphere across all events, owing to the venue’s acoustics.
London Stadium to be expanded for West Ham
The Mail have now revealed that the London Stadium, which is currently the third biggest in the Premier League with a capacity of 62,500, is now set to overtake Tottenham’s home ground over the coming years.
The report reveals that West Ham have agreed on an informal plan with the London Stadium’s owners, London Legacy Development Corporation, to add 5500 seats and boost the capacity to up to 68,013.
The outlet adds that the deal could be formalised within the next two years, with the Hammers hopeful of having the extra capacity introduced in time for the 2026-27 season.
Spurs Web Opinion
No matter how much capacity is added to the London Stadium, the venue is not very aesthetically appealing and the distance between the spectators and the pitch will remain a huge disadvantage.
Tottenham’s stadium will always feel like it is bigger due to the spectators being so close to the pitch and due to the acoustics of the venue. It was a huge blessing in disguise for Spurs that the club’s bid to take over the Olympic Stadium failed.
