The print edition of Mundo Deportivo (as relayed by Sport Witness) have revealed that Atletico Madrid are continuing to track Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but the Spanish side are aware that a deal for the Tottenham man would prove difficult in January.
It is explained that Atletico tried to sign Hojbjerg on a loan deal in the summer but Daniel Levy ‘refused to accept’ their proposal.
As a result, Diego Simeone had to rely on youngster Pablo Barrios to operate as the number six and following his injury, the Argentine coach has decided to play Koke in a deeper role.
Simeone is thought to be keen on reinforcing that position in January, with the club’s CEO Miguel Angel Gil and sporting director Andrea Berta on the lookout for a defensive midfielder.

Hojbjerg remains an option for Atletico Madrid
The report adds that the La Liga giants are ‘still attentive’ to the Tottenham man but they are aware that they will face ‘major problems’ in getting a deal for the Dane over the line.
The first is Rodrigo Bentancur’s recent injury, with Atletico believing that Spurs are now less likely to part ways with Hojbjerg as a result.
The outlet further states that with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr set to take part in AFCON, Ange Postecoglou may need to rely on the former Southampton man.
Finally, the publication adds that the Colchoneros also anticipate facing competition from Juventus for Hojbjerg’s signature.
Spurs Web Opinion
Following Bentancur’s injury, it is unlikely that Postecoglou would be open to offloading Hojbjerg even if Spurs bring another midfielder through the door. The 28-year-old will get a few opportunities to prove his worth over the coming weeks.
