In his latest press conference, Ange Postecoglou has been discussing Tottenham Hotspur’s options for bringing more creativity into the squad, and suggested the answer might not lie in the transfer market.
Spurs appeared to have found the missing piece to their puzzle during the summer when they signed James Maddison from Leicester City. The 26-year-old dazzled in the early days of his Tottenham career, with three goals and five assists (Transfermarkt).
Sadly, the talismanic playmaker pulled up with an injury in the defeat against Chelsea last month, and looks set to miss out until January at the earliest.
Ange Postecoglou has since utilised Rodrigo Bentancur, Giovani Lo Celso, and Dejan Kulusevski in that number 10 role. Bentancur himself is now injured, Lo Celso still needs to prove himself, and Kulusevski ordinarily plays on the right wing.
Postecoglou sees merit in developing youngsters
As such, it figures that Spurs might look to the transfer market next month to acquire someone who can offer a little more creativity to the squad and help them unlock low-block defences.
However, Postecoglou isn’t so sure that is the answer to Tottenham’s problems. He told Football.London: “Well, it is not easy because when you talk about the finished product, you know what that is going to cost in the market and there aren’t that many there.”
Instead, Postecoglou wants to look closer to home. “It is about developing young players here and giving them information and more room for them to continue to grow and understand the different options they have in those areas.
“Some of it is experience of them being in those positions and us giving them new information to execute it better next time.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’m all for developing the younger players and helping them improve, and honestly, I know we want the best for the club at all times, but this is the perfect year to give those young players a chance.
We’re in a transition period, it’s not the end of the world if we don’t finish in the top four, so let’s take this time to get all the players up to the required level.
