Sky Sports have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur would find it difficult to get deals for any of their top centre-back targets over the line in January.

The report backs up what has been widely reported by other outlets over recent months by stating that signing a central defender is the North London club’s top priority next month.

The publication puts forward some of the same names that have been mooted over the last couple of weeks, claiming that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo are the top of the Lilywhites’ wishlist.

However, it is explained that it would not be easy to prise away any of the trio from their clubs mid-season.

Clubs want to hold on to trio Tottenham are watching

Sky Sports state that Nice are intent on batting away the advances of top clubs for Todibo as they eye an unlikely title tilt this season.

Meanwhile, it is revealed that Everton and Palace see Branthwaite and Guehi respectively as being fundamental to their sides, which is why they would not want to let them leave in January.

The publication adds that while Spurs showed interest in Trevoh Chalobah and Lloyd Kelly in the summer, their interest in the Chelsea and Bournemouth stars have cooled due to their injury problems.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think there is any chance of Spurs spending £50m-plus on a centre-back in January, with Van de Ven and Romero likely to continue as Postecoglou’s first-choice pairing.

Tottenham will likely want a clear understudy such as Tosin Adarabioyo and Ben Godfrey or perhaps a young, up-and-coming centre-back, who can mature into a top player over the next year or two.
