L’Equipe have said that Hugo Lloris could be tempted to say yes to a move to Newcastle United in January after turning down a switch to the North East last summer.
A few days ago, we relayed a report from The Daily Mirror which claimed that Newcastle were considering a move for the former Tottenham captain in January after Nick Pope sustained a long-term injury.
The outlet explained that while Eddie Howe is expected to keep faith in Martin Dubravka, he wants a suitable backup, with the Spurs man being one of the names on the club’s wishlist.
The report added that the Magpies hierarchy rate the Frenchman highly and failed with a deadline day move for him in the summer, with the former 36-year-old ‘politely rejecting’ them at the time.
Hugo Lloris could be open to Newcastle move
L’Equipe have now also confirmed that Newcastle made a failed approach for Lloris towards the end of the summer transfer window.
They explain that the Frenchman turned down the chance to move to St James’ Park as he did not want to be Pope’s understudy.
However, they suggest that given Lloris’ situation at Spurs, where he is now third-choice behind Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster, he ‘could be tempted’ to join the Tyneside club next month.
The report adds that the goalkeeper could potentially accept a short-term deal at Newcastle if he is offered one.
Spurs Web Opinion
I would be extremely surprised if Lloris gave the green light to join Newcastle. I am convinced that the 36-year-old would prioritise regular game time, given that he only has a few years of football left in him at best. So, I expect him to even accept a deal in the French second division if that is what he has to do to be number one.
