Ange Postecoglou has admitted that his Tottenham side are still very much a work in progress and that it will take a couple of more transfer windows to build the kind of squad which can go toe-to-toe with the best sides in the Premier League.

Tottenham were quite busy during the summer, bringing several younger players through the door to kickstart a brand-new project under Postecoglou.

Reports over the last couple of weeks have said that the Lilywhites are once again expected to be one of the busiest clubs in January, with the club alleged to be targeting three new signings (TEAMtalk).

Spurs have been linked with players of a similar profile to the ones they signed in the summer – young, up-and-coming talent, who look on the verge of exploding on the big stage.

Postecoglou confirmed that that is very much a deliberate strategy, explaining that it is geared towards having sustained success.

When asked whether he wants to sign young and hungry players, the Tottenham head coach told Sky Sports: “Yeah, because that’s what we’re trying to build at the moment.

“Even Vic [Guglielmo Vicario], he’s only 26 for a goalkeeper and the only one we’ve kind of signed who isn’t in that bracket but I still think he’s got the best in front of him is Madders [James Maddison], but all the rest are all young.

“Guys like Pape Sarr, Destiny [Udogie], Pedro [Porro] and [Dejan] Kulusevski – who both [Porro and Kulusevski] became permanent [in the summer] – they’re all in their early 20s, so we’re in the first phase of building something.

“I think when you’ve got young guys and you start building something and they grow together, I think it gives you more chance of having sustained success down the road.”

However, Postecoglou stressed the need for patience, admitting that not all of the rebuilding work can be done in one transfer window.

Spurs need lots of transfer windows to improve

He added: “For us, it’s about constantly evolving this squad. We’ve had one window, we’re going to need multiple windows to get the squad to where we want it to.

“Our ambitions are to play European football and we’re going to need a more robust squad – all of those kind of things factor into it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham have historically had more success with signing young, up-and-coming players while the club’s big-money acquisitions such as Ndombele and Richarlison have not always worked.

Now, they have a manager in place who seemingly prefers working with young, impressionable players rather than superstars. One would expect there to be a lot of synergy between Postecoglou and the Spurs hierarchy.
