Contrary to what various outlets have reported over the last week, journalist Dean Jones believes that Tottenham Hotspur could be able to prise away Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton in January.

Branthwaite has established himself as a mainstay in Sean Dyche’s backline this season on returning from his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven and the England Under-21 international’s reputation is growing by the day.

Various publications have reported over the last week that while the youngster is near the top of Spurs’ wishlist, the Toffees are expected to knock back the Lilywhites’ approach for the player (Sky Sports).

A couple of days ago, Football Transfers even asserted that the Merseysiders would demand around £75m from Tottenham for the 21-year-old as they see the defender as a future England regular.

Spurs could land Jarrad Branthwaite in January

However, Jones feels that there could be a ‘window of opportunity’ for Tottenham and Branthwaite’s other suitors, given the financial turmoil that Everton find themselves in.

When asked about the speculation over the centre-back’s future, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “That is the issue that Everton face and because clubs know it, I think there are a few clubs circling thinking they can get a bargain out of Everton because they can take advantage of their financial position.

“You have to remember that the club is currently surviving on loans from a potential buyer each month just to keep the club going and that’s an unsustainable situation.

“So I think Everton will do all they can get a hold of Braithwaite, but there is a little window of opportunity for other clubs there that I think they are trying to take advantage of.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Tottenham would have to break the bank to sign Branthwaite and I simply do not see Spurs spending £50m-plus on a centre-back next month, given that Van de Ven and Romero are going to continue being Postecoglou’s first-choice pairing.
