Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Benfica defender Morato for a while now, and it seems they are ramping up their pursuit as agent Kia Joorabchian is working to make the move happen.

Everybody knows Tottenham need a new centre-back in the January transfer window. After the injury to Micky van de Ven last month, the squad depth at Spurs has been severely exposed, particularly at the back.

Ange Postecoglou himself has even spoken publicly about his desire to reinforce that area, claiming he is on ‘tenterhooks’ in case another injury depletes his squad further (Football.London).

Morato has been earmarked as a potential signing for Spurs for some time now (Daily Mail). According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), the North London club has ‘intensified’ that interest over recent days.

Tottenham should even have a good idea of how much they would be expected to pay for the Brazilian, with A Bola (relayed by Sport Witness) suggesting Fulham’s €25m (£21.4m) in the summer will need to be bettered if Spurs are to get their man.

Agent looking to get Morato deal done

Now, a new report from CalcioMercato on the matter can “confirm” Spurs are indeed keen to sign Morato, and the situation is currently in the hands of super agent, Kia Joorabchian.

Joorabchian is thought to be “personally taking care” of the negotiations to get Morato to the Premier League. Tottenham seems to be the likely destination, with the Lilywhites having sent scouts to watch the defender on “more than one occasion.”

The report also adds that, although Morato has a release clause of €100m (£86m), Benfica may be willing to part ways with the player for as little as €30m (£25.9m).

Spurs Web Opinion

I do like the like of Morato, and it seems he wouldn’t cost too much to sign, but I’m all in on Jean-Clair Todibo now. He’s a more proven talent, and has a very reasonable price tag.
