Sporting Lisbon are keen to sign Eric Dier on a free transfer next summer, but are now worried they may miss out on the Tottenham Hotspur man due to Fenerbahce’s recent interest in the player.
Dier looks set to call time on his Spurs career having signed for Tottenham from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, the England international has racked up 362 appearances for the Lilywhites over the years (Transfermarkt).
Having been a first team regular under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte, it has been something of a surprise to see Dier fall by the wayside under his new manager, Ange Postecoglou who has opted for a first-choice central defensive partnership of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
With limited game time this season, the 29-year-old looks likely to be on his way out of North London soon. His contract ends next summer, but there’s a chance Dier could be moved on in January if a suitable offer comes in.
Where does Eric Dier’s future lie?
According to Takvim, Fenerbahce could be set to send that offer Tottenham’s way next month. Sporting Lisbon, meanwhile, are more geared towards offering Dier a way out next summer (talkSPORT).
In light of Fenerbahce’s interest, Sporting are now fearful they may miss out on bringing Dier back to Portugal altogether.
That’s according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, who claim it is unlikely Sporting would be able to compete financially if it came down to a January transfer for Dier.
While Sporting are “attentive” to Dier’s situation, and keen to bring in a player of his “experience,” it is thought they can only afford to sign Dier on a free transfer given his current salary expectations.
Sporting are now hoping nostalgia can sway the matter and encourage Dier to return to his former club.
Spurs Web Opinion
If we receive any kind of offer for Dier in January, we should take it. At this stage, I would rather see youngsters like Ashley Phillips or Alfie Dorrington getting minutes ahead of Dier, so if we can generate any kind of income, that’s a big positive.
