Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of three big Premier League sides who are weighing up a move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio.
Despite being just 22 years of age, Inacio is vastly experienced, having made nearly 150 appearances across all competitions for Sporting since breaking into their first-team set-up as a teenager.
He has not only emerged as one of the best defenders in the Primeira Liga but also looks set to be a star for the Portuguese national side, having been capped five times since making his international debut back in March.
Fabrizio Romano revealed in his column on CaughtOffisde last week that Inacio is on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the January window.
However, he added that the deal would be a ‘complicated one’ for Spurs to complete in January, with the central defender having a release clause of €60m (£51.8m) in his contract.
Spurs have an interest in Goncalo Inacio
Jones has now also confirmed that Tottenham have made scouting trips to Portugal this year to run the rule over Inacio.
However, the journalist revealed that the Lilywhites are not alone in their interest in the Sporting star, with Arsenal and Manchester United also monitoring the player.
He told The Debrief: “You also have the Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio who has been interesting to Tottenham and to an extent to Arsenal as well. They have done normal scouting on the player and he’s also on the list at Manchester United as well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham found out during the Pedro Porro deal a year ago just how difficult Sporting can be to negotiate with. I suspect the only way Spurs would be able to get Inacio out of Jose Alvalade Stadium is by paying the release clause.
If Spurs are keen on Inacio, perhaps they might also try including Eric Dier as part of the discussions to see if the Portuguese side are interested in taking him back to the club.
