Former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie believes that Ange Postecoglou would have given Guglielmo Vicario a warning after the Tottenham goalkeeper’s antics in the recent victory over Newcastle United.

While Spurs eased to a 4-1 win against the Magpies at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month, there was some late drama involving Vicario and Callum Wilson, who came on as a second-half substitute for the opposition.

The Italian appeared to pull facial gestures in the striker’s direction and get in his face towards the end of the clash when the result was done and dusted.

Wilson was not happy with what occurred, with the England international accusing the Spurs keeper of a lack of respect in his post-match interview (Sky Sports).

Vicario later hit back at the Newcastle player, stating on social media that “Respect is given to everyone that respects me”, perhaps hinting that Wilson was the instigator (Evening Standard).

Frank McAvennie blasts Gulielmo Vicario

McAvennie has now condemned Vicario’s actions in the strongest possible terms, insisting that Spurs will not win anything if their players behave the way the 27-year-old did.

The pundit insisted that Postecoglou would have let his number one know afterwards that he expects better behaviour from him.

When asked about the incident, McAvennie told Football Insider: “There’s a certain way to win games. But Vicario should not be doing that, not in the game. Tottenham won’t win anything. It’s a total lack of respect from the goalkeeper but he kept doing it and giving it all that.

“If that’s what they’re having to do to beat Newcastle, then I’m sure Ange sorted him out afterwards, he would have been annoyed with him and said something after the game. He would want to much more than that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As with most things in football, people jump to conclusions about incents like these based on their tribal club allegiances.

The reality is that it is impossible to judge what happened without being privy to what was said between Wilson and Vicario. There was nothing too untoward and there is no need to blow this out of proportion.
