PSV Eindhoven director of football Marcel Brands has revealed that while Davinson Sanchez was one of the names at the top of their wishlist last summer, the centre-back did not seem particularly keen on joining the Eredivisie side.

Despite being linked with a whole host of clubs all through the summer transfer window, Sanchez remained at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the closure of the majority of the European transfer window with his last appearance coming in the Carabao Cup exit at Fulham.

Eventually, the Colombian ended up joining Galatasaray during the first week of September in a deal worth €9.5m (£8.1m) with Turkish sides allowed to sign players for an additional two week period beyond the likes of England.

The 27-year-old has been exceptional for the Istanbul club so far this season, having quickly established himself as the leader of Okan Buruk’s backline and the former Spurs man has received plenty of plaudits for his displays (Sporx).

Davinson Sanchez was not keen on PSV move

Sanchez has prevviously experience of playing in the Dutch top flight, having spent a season at Ajax before Tottenham secured his services in the summer of 2017 for a then club record transfer fee.

However, Brands revealed that the centre-back did not see too enthused about the possibility of returning to the Netherlands, which is why PSV decided to turn their attention to other defensive targets.

The Eredivisie club’s director told Voetbal International: “Sanchez was the only one with whom we got the feeling that he did not really want to go.

“In terms of salary, it seemed feasible, but all the other players we talked to quickly made it clear to their then club that they wanted to go to PSV.

“They thought carefully about making the deal possible, for example by dropping certain conditions. Things were different with Sanchez. That’s why we made the choice not to continue with that and loan Armel Bella-Kotchap.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that PSV had qualified for the Champions League, it is a little surprising that Sanchez was not keen on the idea of moving to the Eindhoven club. Perhaps it was because Galatasaray were willing to offer the 27-year-old a much better pay package.
