Amidst reports linking Giovani Lo Celso with a move to Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez has confirmed that he wants to add a midfielder to his squad to replace the injured Gavi.

Multiple outlets have reported over the last month that Lo Celso is Xavi’s number-one target in January, with the Barca boss said to consider the Argentine as the ideal option to replace Gavi’s creativity after the 19-year-old suffered a long-term injury

 Sky Sports even reported earlier this month that Xavi views Barcelona‘s conviction in signing the Tottenham man as a test of how much he is backed by the hierarchy within the La Liga gants

However, Sport suggested two weeks ago that the Spanish coach masterplan of playing Lo Celso in the hole behind Robert Lewandowski is set to be dashed since Spurs have not agreed to come to the negotiating table for the 27-year-old. 

Does Giovani Lo Celso have a future at Spurs?

Meanwhile, 90 min reported just last week that Tottenham are yet to make a final decision on the midfielder’s future and are wary of offering the former Real Betis man a contract.

It remains to be seen if Barca have any success in trying to lure Lo Celso away from North London but Xavi has made it clear that reinforcements in the middle of the park are a priority for the La Liga giants.

He has now said (via The Standard): “We always want to reinforce the pieces we are missing. With Gavi’s injury, we need a player with that profile, it’s clear.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Barca are not in a position to pay a transfer fee for Lo Celso next month, given their financial predicament and I do not see Tottenham being open to loaning out the Argentine, especially considering we are already light on numbers in midfield with the likes of James Maddison already sidelined.
