Journalist Dean Jones has said that while Juventus could prove a tempting destination for Kalvin Phillips, the rumoured Tottenham target would prefer to remain in the Premier League.
Phillips has struggled to get much game time at Manchester City since his move from Leeds United 18 months ago, and it is now increasingly clear that the midfielder is on his way out of the Etihad Stadium in January.
In fact, City boss Pep Guardiola himself back in October that he would not stand in the England international’s way if he wanted a new challenge (Guardian).
Tottenham continue to be named as a potential destination for the 27-year-old, with Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) stating just last week that it looks set to be a three-horse race between Spurs, Newcastle and Juventus for the player.
The publication claimed that Juventus are hopeful that Man City might be hesitant to offload the midfielder to a domestic rival, which would give them an advantage over other suitors.
Do Spurs need Kalvin Phillips?
Jones has suggested that Phillips is more likely to leave the Premier League champions on loan rather than on a permanent deal in next month’s transfer window.
When asked about the speculation focused on the England international’s future, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “While the loan side of it might be possible, I’m not sure that the permanent side would.
“That probably wouldn’t be the case within the Premier League when you consider top sides like Newcastle, West Ham and maybe even Tottenham coming in for Kalvin Phillips.
“I also think Kalvin Phillips, from what I was told, would prefer to stay in the Premier League, if possible. But, obviously, Juventus is a big pull.
“There are not many players who are English that have ever gone and played in Serie A for Juventus, especially in a moment when they’re going to try and chase down a Scudetto.
“It’s something for him to seriously consider but, if Newcastle want to get him, they are going to have to make their move pretty soon.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I would be quite surprised if Phillips gives the green light for a move to Spurs since the midfielder is unlikely to be a regular starter for Ange Postecoglou’s side when everyone is fit and available.
Besides, I also think Totttenham would focus their efforts on a deal for Conor Gallagher, now that it appears as if Chelsea are ready to cash in on the 23-year-old.
