The Athletic’s David Ornstein has his doubts about whether Tottenham will be able to land Jean-Clair Todibo in the January transfer window.

While Todibo was first mooted as a target for Spurs at the start of December (Sky Sports), the speculation linking the Frenchman with a move to the North London club has gone into hyperdrive over the last couple of days.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on his YouTube channel on Wednesday that Tottenham have already started talks with the centre-back’s representatives as well as Nice, adding that the Lilywhites want the deal to be completely swiftly.

This was also backed up by 90 min, who suggested on Thursday that the 23-year-old is near the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wishlist and that the Premier League side could secure his services for just £35m.

Ornstein has his doubts over Todibo to Tottenham

However, Ornstein’s latest update comes as a blow to Spurs, with the journalist suggesting that a deal for the French international would be difficult for Tottenham to do in January.

The journalist wrote about Spurs’ January plans: “The priority is a centre-back and a lot of work is being done. Names such as Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo are in the public domain but it is doubtful the France international defender will join Spurs this winter.”

Just as Tottenham did during their pursuit of David Raya last summer, I suspect the club will quickly move on to other targets if Nice make the negotiations for Todibo difficult. 

If reports over the last couple of days are to be believed, Radu Dragusin appears to be the next name on the North London side’s radar.
