The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Tottenham’s plans to sign a midfielder and a forward would be influenced by potential outgoings as well as by the recovery of their injured stars.
On Thursday, we relayed the updates which Charlie Eccleshare had provided on The Athletic about Tottenham’s plans for next month’s transfer window, with the journalist making it clear that a centre-back and a number eight are the Lilywhites’ main priorities.
While Eccleshare named the likes of Jean-Clair Todibo, Radu Dragusin, Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo as the centre-backs on Spurs’ radar, he backed the club to make a move for Conor Gallagher after Chelsea decided to put the midfielder up for sale.
Injuries and outgoings could influence moves
His colleague, Ornstein, has now revealed that Spurs are operating on a ‘tight budget’ and will have to be ‘creative’ in the transfer window.
He claimed that Spurs will only finalise their plans to sign a midfielder and wide attacker once they have further clarity on when the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Giovani Lo Celso and Manor Solomon will regain fitness.
Ornstein added that the club’s decision can also be determined by potential exits, with Tottenham willing to listen to offers for both Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier.

It seems unlikely that either Maddison nor Bentancur are going to be fit in a matter of weeks and with Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma set to be unavailable during AFCON, Tottenham would need to prioritise signing a midfielder irrespective of potential exits.
I suspect we will see Spurs push ahead with an offer for Gallagher as the 23-year-old is someone that Postecoglou seems to admire.
