Tottenham Hotspur just about hung onto a 2-1 home win against in-form Everton this evening in the Premier League to send their fans home with Christmas cheer.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match:

LONDON, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 23: Richarlison of Tottenham Hotspur celebrates with Dejan Kulusevski of Tottenham Hotspur after scoring their team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton FC at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 23, 2023 in London, England. Top Four at Christmas

Tottenham Hotspur are now guaranteed to be in the top four at Christmas, thanks to Man City not playing this weekend. Even better still, the Lilywhites have made up ground on Aston Villa (who drew to Sheffield United) and at least one of Liverpool and Arsenal (who face off this evening). Merry Christmas!

A Couple of Knocks

Cristian Romero was forced off at half-time with a knock and was later seen with ice being applied to his thigh. This came after the Argentine went down in the opening minutes following a rather innocuous challenge, and seemed rather muted for the remainder of the half. Richarlison, meanwhile, was removed just after the hour mark and seemed to be holding the small of his back in slight discomfort. Hopefully, both are just minor aches and pains.

No More Suspensions

Romero and Pape Matar Sarr went into the game today on four yellow cards, meaning a booking for either would see them miss the match against Brighton. Fortunately, both players came through with an unblemished record. The only downside is that Dejan Kulusevski is now just one booking away from a ban himself.

Richarlison’s Run of Goals

For the first time in his Spurs career, Richarlison can now claim to actually be on a run of goalscoring form. That is huge for the team! Having a confident number nine who is able to make those simple runs into the box and be there to tap the ball home is just what Ange ball needs. Especially when Sonny is also still netting from his position out wide. Well done, Richy!

The Squad Needs So Much More

I think the winter period is telling us what we really already knew. The current Spurs squad cannot cope with multiple games per week playing Ange-ball. Despite back-to-back wins, Tottenham have looked so sloppy against Everton and Forest, and a lot of that is down to injuries, suspensions and rotations. Had Spurs been playing in Europe this year, I think we would be struggling domestically. But, that makes the plan clear and simple. Give Ange the resources he needs to build a team with two great options in every position over the next two years or so.

Have something to tell us about this article?
