Everton centre-back James Tarkowski has revealed that he told Harry Kane a few years ago that Tottenham should sign Dwight McNeil.
McNeil made a name for himself at Burnley where he was captained by Tarkowski, with the winger proving to be the Claret’s biggest main creative force for several years.
Both Tarkowski and McNeil swapped Turf Moor for Goodison Park 18 months ago and the pair have since been reunited with Sean Dyche at the Merseyside club.
The winger has taken his game up another notch since his switch to the Toffees and is now making a regular impact in the final third.
Spurs were allegedly interested in McNeil during the summer of 2022, with 90 min reporting at the time that the Lilywhites were one of several clubs to ask about the player following Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.
Dwight McNeil was recommended to Tottenham
Tarkowski has now revealed that he told Kane that Tottenham should be looking at the winger even before the youngster had established himself as a regular in the Claret’s starting eleven.
The Everton centre-back said on Ben Foster’s Podcast: “I remember speaking to Harry Kane at Spurs one time and I said you have to look at Dwight McNeil, he is a sensational player and I think they signed [Ryan] Sessegnon after that.
“For me, he is right up there with the wingers for me. His work rate is through the roof but he also has a left foot like a dream. He just strikes the ball so cleanly and some of the goals he has scored recently have been incredible.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I suspect that Tottenham mainly looked at McNeil 18 months ago as a potential option for the left wing-back role in Antonio Conte’s system. The Everton man is not quite dynamic enough to start in Spurs’ front three under Postecoglou.
