Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Tottenham to break the bank to sign Ivan Toney, insisting that the Brentford star’s addition will make Ange Posteocglou’s side a frightening prospect to play against.
Several reports over the past few months have indicated that Spurs had explored a move for Toney, along with their London rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea (Daily Express).
However, over the last few weeks, some publications have played down the prospect of the Lilywhites pushing ahead with a move for the 27-year-old.
This includes a recent update from The Independent, who claimed that while Tottenham would love to sign Toney, they have been priced out of a move for the striker after Brentford demanded £80m for their star man.
The report added that Arsenal had now moved into pole position to land the England international ahead of Chelsea, with the player said to prefer a move to the Emirates over Stamford Bridge.
Agbonlahor tells Spurs to splash the cash
Agbonlahor has now stated Toney would be the cherry on top for Spurs and would make their attack look a lot more formidable than it currently is.
The former Aston Villa star told talkSPORT: “Spurs are another one that needs to go out and get Ivan Toney, if I was Brentford I’d have an auction, I’d say, ‘Here’s the amount, going once, going twice’.
“Spurs have got in great signings, [Micky] Van de Ven, [James] Maddison, [Destiny] Udogie has come in from his [Udinese] loan, [Yves] Bissouma is playing better, get a striker!
“[Dejan] Kulusevski on the right, Son [Heung-min] on the left, a top striker like Toney with Maddison in behind, Spurs would be frightening!”
Spurs Web Opinion
It would not make sense for Tottenham to shell out £80m on a centre-forward in January, particularly since Richarlison is now playing with confidence and looking a lot more like the player we saw during his Everton days.
It will not do the Brazilian’s confidence any good if Tottenham go out and sign a striker next month. I think Postecoglou will make a decision on the number nine role at the end of the season.
