Ange Postecoglou admits that while he would ideally like a centre-back to arrive through the door early in the January transfer window, he acknowledges that doing so might not be straightforward for the club.

According to various reports over the last week, Tottenham are not wasting any time in trying to get a centre-back through the door, with the Lilywhites already alleged to have begun talks with Nice regarding Jean Clair-Todibo (Fabrizio Romano – YouTube).

TEAMtalk asserted last week that Spurs are keen to sign a defender within the first couple of weeks of January and are thus prepared to swiftly turn their attention to other defenders if Nice drag their feet on the Frenchman.

The Lilywhites learned this week that Cristian Romero now faces a month on the sidelines due to a hamstring strain and the news is only likely to add even more urgency to the club’s pursuit of a central defender.

Postecoglou hopeful of an early centre-back signing

Postecoglou admitted that a signing early in the window would be of immense help to his side, noting that it might take a few weeks for any newcomersto adapt to his system and potentially a new league.

When asked if Tottenham need to sign a centre-back as soon as the window opens following Romero’s injury, the Australian told Football.London: “I don’t know [if we can] because there’s just so many moving parts. Obviously, if we can do business early it’s great for us, not just because of losing Romero but there’s a whole month there – why waste it?” said the Tottenham head coach.

“If you can bring them in early, even if they don’t play you can bed them into training and our style of football because it’s not like we’re going to sign somebody and they’ll hit the ground running. Maybe they could.

“Whereas if you leave it towards the end of January, it’s potentially not until mid to end of February when they get up to speed, depending where they’re coming from, the league they’re coming from.

“So there’s a whole lot of moving parts. So yes, I’d love to do something early in the window but even me saying that puts a challenge on us – because other clubs know we want to do something early.

“You’ve got to play the game, we’ll see what happens but I’m hopeful it will be much earlier than the end of the window before we bring someone in.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Deals can often prove quite complicated in the January market as clubs would not want to lose key players mid-season. So, it would not be easy for Spurs to accelerate negotiations but they have no choice but to do just that, given the busy month we have coming up.
