Speaking after his side collapsed to a 4-2 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion tonight, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou admitted the two penalties his team conceded were fair decisions, but did have one complaint.

A depleted Tottenham squad struggled to cope with a lively Brighton side tonight, and paid the price for some foolish decisions by giving away costly penalties in each half.

Spurs enjoyed the majority of possession throughout, but went into half-time two goals behind. Brighton youngster Jack Hinshelwood scored a fine goal to get things started, before Dejan Kulusevski pulled Danny Welbeck’s shirt in the box, with Joao Pedro converting the resulting penalty.

In the second half, Pervis Estupinan scored a world class, long range effort to put the game beyond Spurs, before Giovani Lo Celso made a clumsy challenge leading to another penalty, which Pedro once again put in the back of the net.

A late consolation goal from Alejo Veliz, his first for Spurs, plus a Ben Davies headed goal, gave the away side hope, but it was too little, too late at that point.

Postecoglou thinks VAR missed Dunk challenge

In his post match press conference (via BBC Sport), Ange Postecoglou discussed those two penalties that cost his team tonight, but admitted he couldn’t argue with those decisions.

He said: “There are no grumbles from me with the penalties. They were clear and obvious.”

However, Postecoglou did take issue with a Lewis Dunk challenge on Dejan Kulusevski which upon further inspection appeared to be very dangerous: “It’s amazing that VAR picks up everything apart from a tackle that maybe puts out another of our players.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There’s not a lot we can say about the penalties. They were both stupid decisions from Kulusevski and Lo Celso, and they have cost us dearly tonight in retrospect. The Dunk challenge was a bad one, too, and should have been picked up by VAR.
