A couple of anonymous former Tottenham teammates of Mousa Dembele’s have admitted that the midfielder was quite relaxed, bordering on the edge of laziness in training, but was capable of turning it on whenever he wanted.
Dembele is widely considered by many Spurs fans to be one of the most talented players to have played for the club in recent decades.
It is inarguable that the Belgian is one of the most underrated players in Premier League history and there is no doubt that he underachieved relative to his talent.
The Athletic have now provided one reason why that might be the case, revealing that the former Spurs star could be quite lazy in training.
The article, written by Charlie Eccleshare, digs into Dembele’s mythical status at Tottenham and is very complimentary about the midfielder’s raw skill, and relays the fact that many of the midfielder’s Spurs and Belgium teammates raved about his ability.
Football came rather easy to Mousa Dembele
However, the article also spoke to a couple of anonymous former Spurs players who explained that the 36-year-old had quite a relaxed personality, and sometimes did not try his hardest.
One unnamed former colleague is quoted as saying about the midfielder: “He could be a lazy so-and-so. But he was the kind of personality you’d laugh at because you knew that was just how he carried himself.
“In a way, he showed that on the pitch as well — he could look a bit lazy, but then when he got on the ball it was just like, ‘This guy is unbelievable’.”
Another colleague says about Dembele: “He was very relaxed and calm off the pitch and he kind of played like that — he’d lure you in by looking lazy, and then drop the shoulder and spin you.
“We never saw him go full pelt in training unless it was something like two-v-twos or three-v-threes, and then he’d run the show. He’d used his body so well that in tight areas you just couldn’t get the ball off him.”

Dembele’s easy-going and relaxed nature might have been one of the reasons why he perhaps did not fulfil his potential at the top level (even thought he did have a very good career).
Another was the fact that he possessed such a mishmash of skill sets and could not easily be pigeonholed into a position. That perhaps explains why he started his career as a striker and played in several positions before evolving into one of the two number sixes in Pochettino’s system.
