Who is Radu Dragusin? There are a number of names being linked to Tottenham ahead of the January transfer market, and we’ve got the key details on one of the club’s top targets.
Ange Postecoglou is in desperate need of a new centre-half, with both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero currently struggling with hamstring injuries.
The January transfer window opens very soon, and one name continually linked with a move to North London is Radu Dragusin (The Athletic). So, now is as good a time as any to learn all about the defender.
Name: Radu Matei Drăgușin
Age: 21-years-old
Place of birth: Bucarest, Romania
Current club: Genoa
Former clubs: AS Metropolitan, Juventus, Sampdoria, Salernitana
International appearances: 12 caps for Romania (Transfermarkt)
Club appearances: 143 appearances, 11 goals at both senior and youth level (Transfermarkt)
Radu Dragusin career stats
Radu Dragusin may only be 21 years old, but he has been playing senior football since the 2020/21 season. However, it is only since joining Genoa that he has held down a regular first-team spot and made himself known in the world of football.
This season, Dragusin has made 75 clearances, putting him joint-fourth in Serie A for that particular statistic. He also has the third most aerial battles won this term with 52 (FBRef).
At international level, Dragusin already has 12 caps for Romania, having made his debut in March of 2022. In 2023, the centre-back has missed just 45 minutes of action for his country, playing the full 90 minutes in all but one of Romania’s ten Euro 2024 qualifiers (Transfermarkt).
Radu Dragusin strengths and weaknesses
As a tall, commanding centre-half, it should come as no surprise that Radu Dragusin is most impressive when he is either defending or attacking the ball in the air. The Romanian rarely loses an aerial battle, and is also a threat at set-pieces at the other end of the pitch.
Dragusin is a bit of a no-nonsense defender; the kind of player you can rely on to clear the ball out of dangerous areas and relieve the pressure on his team. He puts his body on the line, gets himself in the right place at the right time, and utilises his physicality to get the job done in defensive areas.
One area that could be of concern for Spurs fans should Dragusin sign for the club is that he is not the most adept at passing. A key element of Ange-ball is the ability to pass the ball forward out of defence, but Dragusin has rarely exhibited this skillset while at Genoa. However, there is an argument to be made that this is simply because the Italian side do not play this style of football.
What are people saying about Radu Dragusin?
One of the main people doing the talking about Radu Dragusin is the player’s agent, Florin Manea. He recently told Fanatik that Tottenham had made contact, but insisted ‘several clubs’ were tracking his client.
So, Spurs will likely face competition if they are to secure this signing. Apparently, whoever wants to sign Dragusin will need to pay between £21.6m-£26m, but it is thought Tottenham are at the front of the queue (Gazzetta dello Sport as relayed by Sport Witness).
Fans in Italy rate Dragusin highly, with Antonio Esposito claiming the defender has made a ‘big statement’ in Serie A and is now a ‘leader’ within his team’s defence. Meanwhile, Gazeta Sporturilor selected Dragusin as their Romanian footballer of the year recently, which is high praise indeed.
What do The Spurs Web think?
I do like Radu Dragusin, and I would be happy if Spurs were to sign him. He wouldn’t be my first choice in January (I would rather we sign Jean-Clair Todibo and/or Sebastian Caceres), but we could do much worse than signing a player like Dragusin, who has plenty of room to develop still.
